THE NORTHERN FISHING SCHOOL ~ Introduction

Updated: Jun 2, 2020

Fishing is hardcore, for men only and something you do alone. Right??? WRONG!!!

Fishing is fun, It’s for everyone and something you can share with family & friends.

RIGHT!!!

At the Northern Fishing School we will bust these myths by providing our services and promoting them to all ages and all abilities, both girls and boys. Our core purpose is to encourage more women, millennials and children to take up this wonderful sport.

The Northern Fishing School will provide guided services and tailored fishing courses mixed with activities such as cooking, golf, clay shooting, yoga and spa to name but a few. We will also have trout & salmon beginners courses and a 5 session package for local schools to educate children about the river environment, conservation, fly tying, casting, how to catch your first fish and then how to cook it.

We would like to introduce the Northern Fishing School guides who will be offering their support at the school, Marina Gibson, founder of the NFS and a Certified Fly Fishers International CI Instructor and Angling Trust Level 2 Coach, Brian Towers, a newly qualified AAPGAI Advanced double-handed Instructor and Beni who has just completed a guiding course at Sweetwater Guide School in Montana.

With the help of the Angling Trust we will hold free fishing days for charities throughout the year focusing on mental health, cancer recovery, disadvantaged children and the disabled.

The school comprises a beginners casting lake, at Swinton Park Hotel, access to Leighton Reservoir run by Josh Riddell and Family. Salmon, trout and grayling fishing on the Swinton beats of the River Ure and Burn.

The Northern Fishing School shop & office is located opposite the spa car park, please contact us prior to your visit.

From Marina Gibson:

I’ve now got some big thank yous to make...

Mark and Felicity Cunliffe-Lister, thank you so much for giving me this incredible opportunity to base the school at Swinton Estate which as you know is a magnificent venue, and the Swinton Estate Team supporting me every inch of the way and for creating such a brilliant space to run our business, you’ve been amazing.

Thank you to Orvis UK who have supported me with my new venture. We will be selling their waders, rods, reels and all the necessities needed for a brilliant days fishing. A special thank you to Simply Flies for producing the fly boxes for the launch events. We have Simply Flies Trout flies and Caledonia salmon flies available at the shop.

Fishtripr, who I’m excited to announce I’m an Ambassador for and collaborating with them on their new platform, which is how you book any of the courses via the Northern Fishing School website.

To Dave Bamford the River Ure Manager for always being available to advise me. And if you’re not already a member of the Ure Salmon Group please sign up to support the work they do on the River Ure.

Thank you also to Jenny Bourne Arton who with Christian & Rachel Collison from Nifty Comms and Richard Gill from Tarn Graphics have all helped launch the business today.

Thank you to my family and my husband, Edd for supporting my vision, challenging my ideas and believing in me.

And lastly thank you to everyone for attending the launch events. We're so excited to be creating this mecca for people to learn to fly fish in Gods Own County. It really is a dream come true.

I wish you tight lines and screaming reels for this season!

Thank you.
